U.S./Top News
1) Bahrain deployed thousands of security forces Sunday to confront anti-government protesters ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Shiite-led uprising that seeks to loosen the ruling Sunni dynasty's monopoly on power, AP reports. Bahrain's ruling Sunni monarchy has warned it would not tolerate a spike in protests to mark the anniversary. Shiites account for about 70 percent of Bahrain's population of some 525,000 people, but say they have faced decades of discrimination.

Can Joe Lieberman Block Diplomacy With Iran That Would Prevent War?
Joe Lieberman and Lindsay Graham plan to introduce a bill that seeks to push the President to declare that it would be "unacceptable" for Iran to have a "nuclear weapons *capability*"? What's so outrageous about this? According to U.S. and European officials cited in the New York Times, an Iran that has but does not use the capacity to produce nuclear weapons is the best achievable outcome. So what Lieberman and Graham are really trying to do is block any meaningful diplomatic engagement with Iran; they are trying to remove from the table anything except war and externally-induced regime change.

Glenn Greenwald: The growing Iranian military behemoth
Claims Iran will increase its military budget for next year by 127% have been widely reported. Whether this is feasible is dubious, but suppose it will actually happen. According to the SIPRI Military Expenditure Database, Iran's total annual military spending is $7 billion; an increase of 127% would take it to $15.8 billion - also known as: less than 2% of total U.S. military spending (which was $698 billion for fiscal year 2010). According to Defense News, Iran's official military budget for 2011 is actually $12 billion; an increase of 127% would bring it to $27.2 billion, also known as: less than 4% of U.S. military spending. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Afghan shift: The U.S. is right to curtail combat earlier
Americans who believe the U.S. has put enough lives and money into Afghanistan should be pleased by Defense Secretary Panetta's statement that the U.S. role will be shifted from combat to training sooner than planned, to mid-2013, says the paper in an editorial. The US is no longer fighting al-Qaida; instead, it has become involved in a civil war. As long as the Karzai government continues to rely on U.S. forces for its existence it is much less likely to arrive at the political compromises required to achieve a new working arrangement with the Taliban.

Action: Urge Obama: In Iran Diplomacy, Go for a Feasible Deal Now
Few have hope that a diplomatic deal that would resolve all outstanding issues between the U.S. and Iran is politically feasible within the six month timeline envisioned by the sanctions passed by Congress, especially given that this is an election year. But a deal that would lower tensions and put off the most extreme sanctions may be possible. Urge President Obama to pursue an interim deal to ease tensions with Iran.
