* Update: WaPo Ombud Investigating Iran "Quest for Nuclear Weapons" Claim
A key way that US media helped railroad the nation into war with Iraq in 2002-3 was by treating as "fact" key allegations about Iraq's alleged WMD program which had not been proven - and which turned out to be false. Now the Washington Post is treating the unproven allegation that Iran has a nuclear weapons program as if it were a known fact.

Update: The Washington Post Ombudsman called and said he is looking into our complaint. Thanks to everyone who took action! We'll let you know in this space of any result.

War-Weary Republicans Rebuke Romney On Afghanistan
On Wednesday night, the Senate adopted by voice vote an amendment calling on President Obama to speed up U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan. The vote is a green light from the Senate to the White House for a faster military withdrawal that would save many American and Afghan lives and (at least) many tens of billions of taxpayer dollars.

War-Weary Republicans Rebuke Romney On Afghanistan
On Wednesday night, the Senate adopted by voice vote an amendment introduced by Oregon Democrat Jeff Merkley calling on President Obama to speed up U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan. This was a watershed event towards ending the war. The previous high water mark of Senators calling for expedited withdrawal was 27; the previous high water mark on a vote was 18. The vote is a green light from the Senate to the White House for a faster military withdrawal that would save many American and Afghan lives and (at least) many tens of billions of taxpayer dollars.

Merkley Amendment Passes Senate by Voice Vote
In a stunning development, the Senate today approved the Merkley Amendment to the NDAA, calling for an expedited military withdrawal from Afghanistan, by voice vote. Previously, 27 was the high water mark of Senators urging a speedier withdrawal.

Senators Have Ideas for Cutting the Military Budget
You might not know it from national press reports, but there are plenty of Members of Congress of both political parties who think that cutting the military budget is a perfectly reasonable thing to do, and have concrete ideas for doing so. You can see that senators have ideas for cutting the military budget from the list of amendments filed in the Senate to the National Defense Authorization Act, currently under consideration.

Shortening the War Would Pay for Half of the Payroll Tax Holiday
If the war in Afghanistan were shortened by two years - as Senators Merkley, Paul, and Udall have proposed - that would easily save $120 billion, half the cost of the extension of the payroll tax holiday, which is expected to create half a million American jobs.

Sen. Merkley's Harm Reduction Plan for Afghanistan Would Save Lives and Billions
Shortening the war by two years would save hundreds of American and Afghan lives and $200 billion dollars. That's real money: a sixth of the Super Committee's goal. Wouldn't you rather shorten the Afghan war by two years than cut Social Security benefits or raise the Medicare retirement age?

Sen. Merkley's Harm Reduction Plan for Afghanistan Would Save Lives and Billions

If Senator Jeff Merkley's "expedite the drawdown from Afghanistan" amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act makes a strong showing, that could tip the Obama Administration towards a faster drawdown.

That would likely save hundreds of American and Afghan lives - not to mention all the people who wouldn't be physically and psychologically maimed - and could easily save the U.S. hundreds of billions of dollars, at a time when the alleged need for fiscal austerity is being touted as a reason to cut Social Security benefits and raise the Medicare retirement age.

Everyone knows the Hippocratic Oath: "First, do no harm." It's a great motto to try to live by. But unfortunately, in this life on Earth, "Do no harm" isn't always on the menu at the restaurant. Sometimes, you're already doing harm, and there's no feasible immediate path to zero harm. Sometimes the best you can do in the short run is to reduce the harm as much as possible. And if that's the best you can do, then that is what you must do.

It's not politically feasible, unfortunately, to end the war tomorrow. But we could take a big bite out of it in the next week. And that would save many lives and real money. [You can ask your Senators to co-sponsor the Merkley amendment here.]

Merkley's amendment (#1174) says:

1) the President should expedite the transition of security responsibility to the government of Afghanistan;

2) the President shall devise a plan for expediting the drawdown of U.S. combat troops in Afghanistan and accelerating the transfer of security authority to Afghan authorities prior to December 2014; and

Kate Gould: Nuclear Option Against Iran's Economy Paves Way for War
Senators Mitch McConnell and Mark Kirk have proposed an amendment to the Defense Authorization Act that would bind the administration into sanctioning Iran's central bank. Some U.S. officials have characterized this as the "nuclear option," in U.S. sanctions. Some Iranian officials have declared that any sanctions on the Central Bank would be treated as an act of war. The Obama Administration earlier rejected sanctioning Iran's central bank on the grounds that the resulting run-up in gas prices would hurt the U.S. economy.
