Could Congress Block Antiworker IMF 'Bailouts' in Europe?

Republicans are trying to block the Treasury Department from supporting U.S. tax funded IMF contributions to the "bailouts" in Europe, which, as economist Mark Weisbrot explains, aren't bailouts for working families at all - for working families, the IMF programs guarantee extreme hardship, and most Europeans would be much better off if these IMF packages collapse - but bailouts of European banks with bad loans. If a handful of anti-IMF Democrats decide to pile in with the Republicans, it's a whole new ballgame.

Did Obama Say Yes to Afghan Peace Talks?

Here's what Obama said in public: "On the related subject of Afghan-led peace and reconciliation efforts, I appreciated the President sharing his plans for the upcoming consultative peace jirga - an important milestone that America supports. In addition, the United States supports the efforts of the Afghan government to open the door to Taliban who cut their ties to al Qaeda, abandon violence, and accept the Afghan constitution, including respect for human rights. And I look forward to a continued dialogue with our Afghan partners on these efforts."

The final version of the ad we put in the Politico, and the letter that 15 groups sent to President Obama urging him to say yes to peace talks, are here:

Can Brazil Save the World From War With Iran?
We're at a new moment in international relations, in which countries outside of the permanent members of the Security Council and their handpicked allies are insisting on having meaningful input into fundamental international issues of war and peace, and are starting to have some success in pressing their case for inclusion. Brazil has been a leader in these efforts. The most striking example of this shift is the recent willingness of Brazil and Turkey to challenge the leadership of the United States on the question of responding to Iran's nuclear program.

Mondoweiss: UC divestment spreads - UC San Diego to vote on bill tomorrow
The resolution calls for the UC system to stop investing in companies such as General Electric and United Technologies, which supporters of the resolution claim promote violence by providing technology - such as helicopters and aircraft engines - to warring countries around the world. Senior Leena Barakat - who helped draft the resolution - said the UCSD version was altered to ensure that it condemned human-rights violations as a whole, and not specifically actions taken by the state of Israel.
