Iran Deal

Oppose AIPAC Bills Attacking Iran Deal & Palestinian Human Rights

Lobbyists with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee [AIPAC] are pressing Members of Congress to co-sponsor bills that attack the Iran nuclear agreement by imposing new sanctions on Iran [S.722 & H.R.1698] and attack Palestinian self-determination by promoting Israeli settlements in the West Bank [S.720 & H.R.1697].

Urge your reps. to oppose these bills by signing our petition at MoveOn.

S.722 would designate part of Iran's military as a terrorist organization, which would obstruct contact between the U.S. and Iranian militaries. U.S. military leaders have opposed this move on the grounds that it would undermine the U.S. fight against ISIS in Iraq.

WaPo: Foreign policy elite hates Obama for blocking new Syria war

The Washington Post reports that Washington's bipartisan foreign policy elite is united in their passion for a new war in Syria, and is looking forward eagerly to Obama's departure from office, because they see the Obama Administration as the key obstacle to their plans for a new war in Syria.

Reality-based comments like this from Obama Administration officials drive the bipartisan foreign policy elite up the wall:

“You can’t pretend you can go to war against Assad and not go to war against the Russians,” said a senior administration official who is involved in Middle East policy and was granted anonymity to discuss internal White House deliberations.

New York Representative Eliot Engel, who voted for the Iraq war and opposed the Iran nuclear deal is trying to promote a new war in Syria and undermine U.S. diplomacy with a bill that calls for the U.S. to impose a "no fly zone" against Russian and Syrian planes. Engel's bill also attacks the Iran nuclear deal by re-imposing sanctions on Iran that were lifted in the deal.

Call your Representative now at (202) 224-3121. When you reach a staffer or leave a message, you can say something like:

"I urge you to oppose Engel's bill HR 5732. This bill promotes a new war in Syria, undermines U.S. diplomacy, and undermines the Iran nuclear deal."

Call-In: Tell Your Democratic Senator to Stand Firm in Support of the Iran Deal

AIPAC has failed to stop the Iran deal. Last Thursday, 42 Senators stood by their word, supported diplomacy, and stopped Republican efforts to block the deal. [1]

But we cannot stop to celebrate just yet.

Only two Senate votes provided the margin by which Republican efforts to undermine the agreement were thwarted. There will likely be another vote, now that AIPAC has had a chance to regroup and target Democratic Senators that were slow to pledge their support or were not as full-throated in their support of the deal.

If even one Senator stops supporting the deal, it's likely that more than one will. Your Democratic Senator is one of the Senators AIPAC might target.

Call your Democratic Senator at (202) 224-3121 and say

"Thank you for voting to support the Iran deal. I urge you to continue to support it and to stand strong for diplomacy and peace."

Call-in: Seven More Senators Needed to Stand for Diplomacy

With Senator Barbara Mikulski’s support, 34 Democratic Senators have now publicly supported the Iran deal! That means it's "game over" for Republican-AIPAC efforts to kill the agreement – even if the Republican Congress passes a resolution of disapproval, President Obama will veto it and the Republicans and AIPAC won’t have the votes to override President Obama’s veto.

But we’re not done, because another important goal is now within reach. If we can get 41 Senators to support the Iran deal, the Republicans and AIPAC won’t even be able to get a resolution disapproving the Iran deal out of the Senate. That will send an important message to the world, and to the nation, that we learned something from the fiasco of the Iraq war, that the United States is no longer the country of “shoot first, ask questions later.”

Call your Democratic Senator at (202) 224-3121 and say

“I urge you to publicly support the Iran deal. Opposing it now only undermines the United States’ international leadership for using diplomacy to resolve conflict without war.”

Tell Schumer and Your Representative: They're Wrong on the Iran Deal

Today, thousands of activists across the country are participating in over 200 events outside the offices of their Senators and Representatives to show their support of the Iran deal.

We are so close to ensuring that Congress can't kill the deal. With Sens. Harry Reid, Debbie Stabenow, and Patty Murray announced their intention to vote in favor of the deal in the last few days, we only need five more Senators to throw their support toward the deal in order to uphold a presidential veto on a resolution of disapproval.

We are also building momentum in the House, where recent announcements by Reps. Jerrold Nadler, Alan Lowenthal, and John Lewis are paving the way for other supporters to come out into the public.

Your Senator, Chuck Schumer, and your Representative are opposed to the Iran Deal. They are wrong on this issue and they should know that their constituents think so — which means they need to hear from you NOW!

Call Senator Schumer NOW at (202) 224-3121, then call your Representative NOW at (202) 224-3121 and say

"Sen. Chuck Schumer/Rep. ______ are wrong to oppose the Iran deal. It is our best chance to avoid another war in the Middle East."

Call-In: Why isn't your Senator supporting the Iran deal?

On Tuesday, the Arms Control Association released a statement signed by 75 non-proliferation and arms control experts stating that the Iran deal “will reduce the risk of a destabilizing nuclear competition in a troubled region… and head off a catastrophic military conflict over Iran’s nuclear program.”

If experts agree that the deal peacefully stops Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and prevents another U.S. war, why hasn’t your Senator publicly committed to voting in favor of the Iran deal yet?

Call your Representative NOW at (202) 224-3121 and say,

“I urge Sen. ______ to support the Iran deal because it is the best way to avoid the U.S. starting another war.”

Call-In: Tell Your Democratic Senator, Schumer's Wrong on Iran Deal

Statements of support and opposition for the Iran nuclear agreement are being released to the media every day. The verdict on the Iran deal is still unclear, but some Democratic senators will oppose the deal.

One key Democrat who announced his opposition is Sen. Charles Schumer. He claimed that the deal would not prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon in 10 years. But 29 nuclear scientists wrote a letter to the President saying that prior to the negotiations, Iran had the capability to produce a weapon in a few weeks. These scientists – among them six Nobel laureates – also agreed that, contrary to Schumer’s claim, “the deal includes important long-term verification procedures that last until 2040, and others that last indefinitely.”

Sen. Schumer was wrong when he voted for the Iraq War and he is wrong now.

Still, some Democrats in the Senate may be swayed by the influential Chuck Schumer. That’s why, to win this fight, Democratic senators like yours need to hear from their constituents so they know the right way to vote.

Call your Democratic Senator at (202) 224-3121 and say:

"I urge Sen. _____ to publicly support the Iran deal because nuclear experts agree that it will ensure Iran does not build a nuclear weapon and avoids another war of choice."
