JFP Campus Advocates

We’re building a new class of progressive political organizers, campaigners, analysts, and future elected officials who are ready to take on the unchecked and unjust militarism of U.S. foreign policy.

Young people across the country should feel empowered to tell their Representatives to end unjust wars. But, too often they are told they are too naive or young to challenge U.S. foreign policy. Basically: they are gaslighted into thinking their opinions are not valid, and as a result, never explore how their own voices can change the policies that are already shaping their future.

As Alice Walker wrote, “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.”

At Just Foreign Policy, we know that bold, transformative leadership comes from people of all backgrounds and people of every age. We started the Campus Advocate program to provide students with opportunities to advance progressive change in U.S. foreign policy.

Be a JFP Campus Advocate

Who you are: You are a student or recent graduate committed to advancing a progressive vision of U.S. foreign policy through strategic campaign advocacy and direct engagement with your elected officials, on and off-campus. You have about 5 hours per week available to work with JFP organizers on time-sensitive campaigns, and can commit to being active with JFP for a full semester.

Campus Advocates work independently, in small teams, or as part of an existing, related student group to advance progressive foreign policy campaigns around specific pieces of legislation.

Every semester, the JFP campus advocate will:

  1. Participate in 30 minute weekly conference calls
  2. Design and lead one issue campaign event, e.g. collect petition signatures, phone bank, or write letters to elected officials.
  3. Organize/attend one political campaign event, e.g. debate watch party, webinar, elected official town hall, or deliver petition signatures to in-district office.
  4. Schedule, attend and lead one lobby meeting with an Elected Official per semester. Where possible, JFP will connect you with other advocates in your region for this meeting.
  5. Submit photos of every action to students@justforeignpolicy.org and tag @justforeignpolicy on instagram/twitter/facebook posts.

JFP Summer Fellowship

JFP Summer Fellows have demonstrable commitment to advancing a progressive vision of U.S. foreign policy through campus and community organizing, and have some organizing experience, on or off-campus. They can also be recent graduates.

JFP summer fellows participate in a part-time 8-week program from early June to late July to advance a progressive vision of U.S. foreign policy with their elected officials and 2020 candidates.

Over the summer, the JFP Summer Fellow will:

  1. Develop a list of community partners in the area, with an explicit focus on frontline communities,  with their contact information, that can be invited to community and campus JFP events.
  2. Design and lead one issue campaign events, e.g. collect petition signatures at farmers markets/other street events, phone banking, writing letters to elected officials.
  3. Host a 2020 debate watch party (can be done w/ a community partner)
  4. Schedule, attend and lead one lobby meeting with an Elected Official
  5. Attend a campaign event for a Presidential candidate (where possible)
  6. Submit photos/video of every action to students@justforeignpolicy.org and tag @justforeignpolicy on instagram/twitter/facebook posts.
